Dr. Samuel Szomstein, was born in New York, USA January 16th. 1968 . he completed Medical School in Venezuela. In 1994 Dr. Szomstein emigrated to the USA, where he completed Residency Training in General Surgery between Long Island Jewish Medical Center and The New York Hospital Medical Center of Queens, NY. From 1995-2001. In 2002 he completed his Fellowship in MIS and Bariatric Surgery at Cleveland Clinic Florida under the guidance of Raul Rosenthal MD FACS FASMBS . He was then appointed in 2002 and currently holds the title of, Associate Director of the Bariatric and Metabolic Institute and Division of MIS as well as Director of The Fellowship Training Program in Advance MIS and Bariatrics.Over 1500 General Surgery and Bariatric procedures are performed yearly by our team. Over 6000 Bariatric Surgeries have been performed to date at The BMI making it one of the largest programs in Florida. Over 400 publications have been published by the SMIS and BMI and over 80 Clinical Bariatric fellows has been trained and over 100 research fellows have come to our program. Dr. Szomstein is currently President of the Florida, Puerto Rico and the Caribbean Islands Chapter of the ASMBS . He is on the Editorial Board of Bariatric Times, Bariatrica and Metabolica IberoAmericana (BMI) and Bariatric Surgical Practice and Patient Care. He’s also the Editor of three Monthly columns, “The Surgeon’s Lounge” for General Surgery News and “The Hole in the Wall” and “Bariatric Checklist” for Bariatric Times. Dr Szomstein is author or co-author in over 300 peer reviewed publications, over 30 book chapters , over 20 educational videos and Invited speaker and faculty to more than 200 national and international conferences . ​
