Dr. Cate Varney, DO, FAAFP, FOMA is a fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians and the Obesity Medicine Association. She certified in Obesity Medicine by the American Board of Obesity Medicine. She has served as the inaugural Obesity Medicine Director for the University of Virginia Health System since 2021. Beyond her local duties, she is an active member of the Advocacy committee for the Obesity Medicine Association and has been a member of The Obesity Society and American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) since 2019. She serves the ASMBS on the state level on the Board of Directors as the Secretary/Treasurer for the Virginia Bariatric Society.
She currently works with patients at UVA Bariatric Surgery clinic to assist with prevention and treatment of weight regain following bariatric surgery. Additionally, she treats and prevents obesity in a primary care setting. She is an Assistant Professor with the University of Virginia Medical School Department of Family Medicine where her duties include curriculum and program development, obesity research, medical student teaching and supervision of the Family Medicine residents.
