John Scott

Dr. Scott is a Clinical Professor of Surgery with the University of South Carolina School of Medicine Greenville and the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Director for the bariatric surgical program of Prisma Health. He also serves as the Chief for the Division of Minimal Access and Bariatric Surgery for the Prisma Health Department of Surgery, the program director for Prisma Health Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) fellowship program, and the medical director for Nutrition Solutions. Dr. Scott holds a Bachelor of Arts in biology from Baylor University and a Master of Science in molecular cell sciences from the University of Memphis. He received his medical degree from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis and then completed his residency in General Surgery at Greenville Health System. He went on to complete a fellowship in advanced minimally invasive and bariatric surgery at the University of Cincinnati. After serving on the University of Tennessee Knoxville University Medical Center faculty as an assistant professor of Surgery, he returned to the Greenville Health System, joining Bariatric Solutions, now known as the Prisma Health Weight Management Institute. His clinical practice and academic work is concentrated primarily on bariatric surgery. The scope of his research has centered new technology and comorbidity reduction as well as studies on access to bariatric care. In addition to his duties with Prisma Health, he serves as the ASMBS representative to the AMA, the Insurance Committee, Access to Care Committee, and the AI Task Force. He participates in a number of other regional and national committees for bariatric surgery issues. He has previously served on the ASMBS Executive Council, as the president of the Bariatric Society of the Carolinas, Chairman of the ASMBS Program and Access to Care Committees and as a member of the South Carolina Medical Association Childhood Obesity Taskforce. He is currently on the board of directors for the TREO Foundation, the ObesityPAC and the Obesity Action Coalition. Dr. Scott is board-certified in General Surgery by the American Board of Surgery with a Focused Practice Designation in Bariatric Surgery and is a Diplomate of the American Board of Obesity Medicine. He is also active in the American College of Surgeons (ACS) and the Southern Surgical Association.
