Kinga Powers

Kinga Powers, MD, a bariatric surgeon board certified by the American Board of Surgery. She has over 15 years of experience performing advanced laparoscopic and endoscopic procedures starting with her advanced-laparoscopy and bariatric surgery fellowship at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Harvard Medical School. She earned her medical degree at Queen's University, Canada. Further she completed her general surgery residency and her PhD at the University of Toronto. Dr. Powers’ doctoral work focused on cell signaling during oxidative stress and subsequently she developed an interest in surgical education, developing models of team training and crisis management in the operating room to improve patient safety. She has presented her work at surgical meetings internationally, and her studies have pioneered new methods for laparoscopic and team skills education. She is the recipient of multiple awards for her research and patient care such as the Wyeth Scholar Award from the American College of Surgeons, The Canadian Institutes of Health Research Postdoctoral Fellowship and an Award for Dedication and Excellence in Clinical Care from the Cambridge Health Alliance. Dr. Powers was elected a board memebr of the NY chapter of the ASMBS and servd as the program chair for the NY state chapter annul meetings. She was previously elected as the President of the Virginia Bariatric Society, a chapter of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) in 2016-2018, and currently serves on the ASMBS Quality Improvement and Patient Safety Committee establishing evidence based clinical pathways for bariatric procedures. Dr. Powers is a Chair of the Publications Committee for The Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES) and is a member of The Fundamental Use of Surgical Energy (FUSE) and Acute Care Task Force Committees, exemplifying her commitment to furthering excellence in surgical practices that lead to the best patient outcomes. Dr. Powers is dedicated to developing clinical pathways, educational platforms, and practice models that enhance quality and safety of patient care, as well as helping patients achieve their health and lifestyle goals using advanced technologies and compassionate care. She works with the multidisciplinary bariatric team to serve communities in Central and Eastern Long Island.
