Jessica Smith

Dr. Smith is the Medical Director of the Bariatric Surgery Program at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics and Chief of General Surgery at the Iowa City Veterans Administration Medical Center. She is a Clinical Associate Professor of Surgery in the Division of Gastrointestinal, Minimally-Invasive, and Bariatric Surgery at the University of Iowa. Dr. Smith attended medical school at the University of California, Davis and completed General Surgery Residency at the University of New Mexico. She then went on to complete a fellowship in Advanced Laparoscopic and Bariatric Surgery at the University of California, San Francisco. She has been on the faculty at the university of Iowa since 2009. Dr. Smith specializes in foregut and advanced laparoscopic surgery, including complex bariatric and metabolic surgery, anti-reflux (GERD) surgery and hiatal hernia repair, minimally invasive surgery for achalsia, gastric surgery, minimally invasive hernia surgery, and other advanced laparoscopic abdominal techniques. Her areas of interest include metabolism, nutrition, and obesity, surgical outcomes and quality improvement, public health and patient education, as well as healthcare disparities and bias.
