A native of central California, Dr. Welsh completed his undergraduate studies at Brigham Young University earning a degree in Linguistics. He attended medical school at Tulane University and completed his general surgery residency training at the University of Hawaii. He completed an advanced minimally invasive and bariatric surgery fellowship at Duke University, including a year of dedicated research in bariatric surgery outcomes. He is certified by the American Board of Surgery with a Focused Practice Designation in Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. He holds active memberships in the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, American Foregut Society, and the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons. He has presented at many national meetings and published several book chapters and peer-reviewed articles and studies. He has clinical interests in minimally invasive surgical techniques, metabolic and bariatric surgery, and surgical ethics.
